The history of the Spa Town began in the second half of 18th century when the Granduke of Tuscany Peter Leopold of Lorraine Habsburg family started to govern the region.

Led by the illuminist ideas the Granduke managed to transform the mere Marsh area into the prosperous Spa Town. He ordered the extensive campaign for the reclamation of the countryside and began the construction of palaces, spa establishments, streets, in order words the he founded of Bagni di Montecatini, later Montecatini Terme.
